How to Choose Window Blinds

As the Agoura Hills area’s leading provider of window blinds and shades for more than 20 years, we have helped hundreds of homeowners get the window treatments that fit their décor, their lifestyle and their budget.

In this article we cover some of the “basics” to consider when choosing blinds.

Of course, the best way to understand your window treatment options is to schedule a free, no-pressure, no-obligation, in-home consultation. This article will get you started – then callus today to schedule your appointment!

Window Blind Slat Sizes

“Blinds” generally refers to a hard window treatment that is constructed from slats or vanes.

Blinds are highly adjustable by a variety of operating systems, including a manual pull cord, a wand or remote control. The slats can be tightly closed for privacy and light blocking, or tilted open at varying angles to allow in the amount of light you choose. They can also be pulled up to the top of the window, to leave a completely unobstructed view.

You will need to decide the width of the slats. Standard slat sizes for window blinds are typically ½ inch, 1 inch and 2 inches.

The ½-inch slat offers the most contemporary feel, and is therefore the most popular. Homeowners desiring a more traditional look generally choose the wider 2-inch slats, which are evocative of older-style Venetian blinds.

1-inch slats are a compromise between the narrow ½ inch and the wide 2 inch blinds. They are generally less expensive than ½ inch slats, while still offering a sleek and contemporary feel.

Vertical Blinds

Blinds with vertical slats are ideal for wide window expanses and sliding glass doors – stacking off to the side, rather than at the top.

Verticals blinds are no longer the noisy, tangling aluminum and plastic versions you probably had in your first apartment. New technologies in material (including sheer fabric) and operating systems (including motorization) make verticals elegant as well as functional.

Top Down Bottom Up Blinds

Homeowners now also have a choice of  how their blinds raise and lower. Traditional blinds only rose from the bottom upwards. But new technologies allow the choice of optional top downward operation, as well.

Top down shades offer complete privacy and light filtering at “eye level” while still allowing natural sunshine (or moonlight) in from above – giving you the best of both worlds!

Window Blind Material

If you think of aluminum when you think of window blinds – think again! Today’s blinds are wood and faux wood, bringing a softer, elegant and more organic feel to windows than traditional aluminum blinds.

While many homeowners prefer the elegance and sophistication of real wood, faux wood blinds have their own advantages – and are often indistinguishable from real wood. Not only can faux wood be substantially less expensive, and it is also not as susceptible to moisture. This makes it a great choice for bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, pool areas and homes in ocean climates.
