There are many decorative options available when choosing drapery hardware. Rods, poles, rings, brackets and clips now come in a wide variety of materials, finishes, styles and colors.

Fixed Draperies vs. Functioning Drapes

Almost any style drapery rod, pole, clip or ring can be used for “fixed draperies” – drapes that remain in one position and are not opened or closed.

However, if you require draperies that open and close, such as draperies over a door wall, you will need to consider which drapery hardware option works best for your intended use.

Traverse Drapery Rods

Traditional traverse rods allow drapery panels to open and close lengthwise across the window or door using draw cords. Usually drapery panels are hung on traverse rods with drapery pins or hooks that are threaded onto tracks on the inside of the curtain rod.

Traverse rods are often utilized with heavy draperies. Typical traverse rods are generally more functional than decorative. in fact, many people paint the small portion of the traverse rod that is visible to match the wall, so that the traverse rod is virtually invisible.

Traverse drapery rod systems can also be motorized for the utmost in convenience. Motorized traverse rod draperies are opened and closed using a remote control, rather than pulling a cord.

Clip Ring Drapery Rods  

Decorative rods with clip rings are also an excellent choice for functioning draperies. Clip ring rods are far more decorative than traverse rods and come in a variety of materials – including wood and metal in a variety of finishes. These drapery rods are meant to be seen and are an integral decorative element of the total window treatment.

The “clip rings” are rings made of metal or wood (or plastic rings) with a hanging clip that attaches to the top of the drapery. The decorative rings slide along the decorative drapery rod, allowing the drapes to be opened or closed manually.
