In 2009, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled over 50 million Roman shades and roll-up shades due to risk of strangulation. Tragically 5 children died and 16 suffered near strangulation.
Close to 85,000 roman shades sold by Pottery Barn between 2003 and 2007 have also been recalled. Six children – thankfully with no fatalities – were ensnared and choked by an exposed inner cord on the backside of the shade.
Target has also recalled more than 160,000 Thermal Sailcloth and Matchstick Bamboo roman shades that were sold 2008 – 2009.
