Choosing Between Horizontal Blinds and Vertical Blinds
Window blinds add a finishing touch to any room, as well as offering light control and privacy. But choosing the right window treatment can sometimes be a challenge. With so many window blind options available, it can be challenging to decide which type are right for your room.
As with anything else, different blinds serve different purposes. Whether you’re looking for something to provide optimal darkness and privacy, or something that let’s in a little more beautiful Southern California sunlight, there are options available to you that will suite your every need.
When shopping for blinds, the first question you must ask yourself is, “Do I want horizontal or vertical?” Both options are available in a wide range of colors, stains, materials, and opacities, all of which leave you with an almost overwhelming amount of choices.
Today, we’ll discuss how to decide of horizontal or vertical blinds are right for you.
Window Blinds: Orientation
Windows that open up and down typically pair best with a window covering that operates in the same direction.
If you want to have your window only partially open, you have the option of raising the blind up to the same level you’ve raised the window, then, depending on your privacy needs, can either open or close the above slats.
Windows that move side-to-side, on the other hand, are best paired with vertically-hanging window fashions. Cover side-opening windows and sliding glass doors with vertical blinds, allowing you to move them out of the way when you’re ready to open your window or door.
Window Blinds: Size
While we offer custom horizontal blinds in a wide variety of sizes, one single horizontal blind large enough to cover particularly sizable windows can add a lot of unnecessary stress on your wall or trim, and can be slightly unwieldy to operate. So if you’ve got a larger window, vertical blinds are the most practical and most functional option.
Horizontal blinds are the ideal choice for smaller openings because they are available in a wide variety of narrow slat widths. If you’re unsure which type of blind is right for your window, call us! We’re happy to assist you in your decision.
Window Blinds: Direction
One important factor that may not immediately occur to some consumers is how the sun hits your house.
Vertical blinds are often used for windows facing the east or west, whereas horizontal blinds are best for windows facing the north or south. This is due to the angle at which sunlight enters your home.
Horizontal shades are adjusted up or down, either blocking sunlight or allowing it in as the sun moves throughout the day. North and south-facing windows never get hit with direct sunlight, so they’re the prime choice for such windows.
Window Blinds: Privacy
If you’re looking for maximum privacy, horizontal blinds are the best choice for you. Horizontal blinds provide total control to open and close them as you need, whereas vertical blinds allow for more visibility from the outside of the home.
