Calabasas Shutter Store: History of Shutters

Calabasas Shutter Store: Shutters in Architecture –

Did you know that shutters are the original window treatment! Shutters even pre-date the invention of curtains and window blinds. Most architectural historians believe that  Plantation Shutters can be dated as far back as the fifteen century.

Shutters probably originated in Greece, as a device for protecting the island’s home interiors from the elements – while still allowing ventilation. Early shutters, while not “louvered,” could be slid across the window space to regulate light and air.

European Shutters – Calabasas Shutter Store

From the Greek’s invention, shutters quickly spread across Europe, becoming particularly popular in warm climates such as Spain & Italy. Think of a scene from Italy or Spain and you will realize that shutters have been an iconic element of European architecture for centuries!

Plantation shutters – wooden shutters with broad louvers set in a solid frame – were then brought to America when the south United States was colonized by Spanish settlers. In fact, this is where our current style of wooden style shutters got there name.  “Plantation shutters” were (and still are) installed on just about every Southern plantation’s mansion.

Shutters were originally popular for many practical reasons. Wood was not only more durable than glass, it was also more readily available and more affordable for the average property owner. Additionally, wood shutters were much more “secure” than glass windows which could easily be broken by an intruder or enemy forces! Also, shutters allowed “ventilation”, shade and privacy while glass windows did not.

Improved Shutter Technology- Buy Shutters Calabasas

Today, shutters are now used for decorative purposes as much as they are for practical purposes. Indeed, shutters still provide the durability, privacy and shade protection that they always have. But, with today’s improved designs and materials, shutters also add a unique design element to any room.

Hardwood shutters, in particular, add a richness and sophistication to any room. Rich dark wood shutters add substance and traditional elegance to a library, formal dining room or masculine den. Painted white wood shutters add charm and warmth to a kitchen or bath. And lighter stained hardwood shutters complement even the most contemporary, casual or modern décor!

Now you know: When you install plantation shutters in your home, you are not only marrying function with form, but you are also carrying on an architectural tradition that is more than 500 years old!
